Osteoporosis is a chronic disease that causes bones to become weak and brittle. It increases the susceptibility to fractures that may lead to chronic pain and long term disability, greatly affecting one’s quality of life.

Osteoporosis afflicts millions of individuals worldwide. In the Philippines, a growing population of elderly Filipinos faces high risk of osteoporosis-related fractures, particularly at the hip. But this silent disease does not only affect older people; osteoporosis can strike at any age.

Among the established risk factors that put an individual at higher risk for osteoporosis are family history of low -impact fracture, calcium and vitamin D deficiencies, sedentary lifestyle, cigarette smoking, and excessive consumption of alcohol, low body weight, sedentary lifestyle and medical conditions that lead to secondary bone loss (i.e. inflammatory arthritis).

Bone Mineral Densitometry Test

iDXA: The gold standard in BMD testing

The MakatiMed Center for Osteoporosis and Bone Health offers bone mineral density (BMD) testing using Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA), dubbed as the gold standard for the detection of osteoporosis. True to its legacy of innovation, the Center is equipped with the very first GE Lunar iDXA machine in Southeast Asia, the latest and most advanced bone densitometer.

The iDXA machine delivers crisp high-resolution images of skeletal sites that result in accurate measurements of bone mineral density as well as comprehensive vertebral assessment for presence of fractures and fat analysis.

On hand to analyze these BMD tests are the Center’s technologists and doctors who are all certified by the International Society for Clinical Densitometry or ISCD. Based on the results of these test, they can make recommendations to the referring physicians for treatment or other ancillary examinations. Response to treatment can also be evaluated through follow-up BMD.

Therapeutic Areas

Complementing the state-of-the-art equipment at the MakatiMed Center for Osteoporosis and Bone Health is its therapeutic area for administering intravenous drugs for different bone related diseases like osteoporosis and inflammatory arthritis (i.e. rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and other connective tissue disease (i.e. systemic lupus erythematosus). The Center’s nursing staff, who has been highly-trained in the delivery of these specialized medications, will attend to the needs of the patients.

With the patient’s utmost comfort and convenience in mind, the theraputic section of the Center was designed to ensure that the patient’s needs are addressed in the most efficient and least stressful manner.
