Anesthesiology
At Makati Medical Center, we realize that a large part of exceptional patient care involves the management of pain and the relief of various discomforts and distress that come with being ill.
We are thus proud of our Anesthesiology department, a pioneer in the field four decades ago, and still a trailblazer until today.
Our department was established in 1968 by four anesthesiologists who were all certified both locally and in the United States. Of the four—Dr. Paz Y. Fores, Dr. Remedios G. Suntay, Dr. Erlinda Escara and Dr. Maria Luisa Roque—Dr. Fores was one among seven anesthesiologists who pioneered the Philippine Board of Anesthesiology.
We were among the first in the country to make use of Pentothal Anesthesia to create a painless delivery experience for women giving birth. Eventually, we introduced epidural anesthesia for painless labor, although we have kept up with the times and now recognize the trend toward more natural and less pharmaceutical pain management during childbirth.
But even early on—long before it became popular—we integrated in our practice the use of other non-traditional methods, such as acupuncture, which Dr. Remedios Suntay introduced after learning of this method in China. We used acupuncture to manage pain in the thyroid, or pain caused by tennis elbows, arthritis and headaches.
