What to Expect at the Emergency Department

If you arrive by ambulance or are unconscious, you will be assigned to a patient bed immediately to be treated. If someone else drives you to the Emergency Department, you will enter the waiting room, where your medical condition will be assessed. At Makati Med’s Emergency Department, no one is ever turned away.

Triage

When you first arrive, a triage nurse will determine the severity of your condition based on your symptoms. The nurse will check your vital signs: temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure. Someone will record your name, address, and medical history.

Examination

After the initial assessment, you will be directed to an examination area where an emergency physician will examine you and order tests that you may need, such as x-rays, blood tests, or electrocardiograms. Your vital signs will be monitored. Nurses and other medical staff will assist you.

Treatment

If you are critically ill or require intravenous medications or fluids, you may be admitted to the hospital. If you are not seriously ill, an emergency physician will discuss your diagnosis and treatment plan with you before you are discharged. You may receive written instructions regarding medications, restrictions or symptoms that may require a follow-up visit.

How You Can Prevent and Respond to an Emergency:

Stay calm and act decisively. The first few minutes after an injury are often the most important. Doctors advise the following four steps:

1. Prevent Medical Emergencies

  • Exercise regularly and undergo medical check-up to protect your health.
  • Reduce risk factors.
  • Quit smoking.

2. Prepare for Emergencies

  • Keep first aid kits at home, at work, and in your car.
  • Recognize emergency warning signs.
  • Keep a list of the medications you and your family take; note allergies.
  • Take first aid classes.
  • Post emergency numbers near the telephone.
  • Recognize life-threatening emergencies. Not every cut or burn requires a trip to the emergency department.

3. Get Help Fast When the Following Warning Signs are Present:

  • Chest pain lasting more than two minutes
  • Uncontrolled bleeding
  • Sudden or severe pain
  • Coughing or vomiting of blood
  • Difficulty in breathing, shortness of breath
  • Sudden dizziness, weakness or change in vision
  • Severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhea
  • Change in mental status, such as difficulty in rising.

4. Act in an Emergency

Action can mean anything— from calling paramedics, applying direct pressure on a wound, performing CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), or splinting an injury. Never perform a procedure if you are unsure how to do it.

Do not move anyone involved in a motor vehicle crash or serious fall or found unconscious, unless the person is in immediate danger of further injury.

Do not give the victim anything to eat or drink. Keep that person covered.
If the victim is bleeding, apply a clean cloth or sterile bandage. If possible, elevate the injury. Apply direct pressure on the wound.
If the victim is not breathing, begin rescue breathing or CPR.

Note:
It is best not to use the Emergency Department for minor or routine health problems. Patients arriving in the Emergency Department are treated based on the severity of their condition. The sickest patients are cared for first. If your problem is relatively minor you may have to wait quite some time before being treated.
