Otorhinolarynology (ENT)

Otorhinolaryngology is the medical specialty that focuses on disorders in the ear, nose, and throat—as well as the head and neck.

Hearing loss, sinus problems and ear infections are some of the things we think of when we think of otorhinolaryngology, but the field actually encompasses more.

Otorhinolaryngology provides for the care of a wide range of disorders, including hearing, balance, smell, taste,  voice, speech language and swallowing.

Our otorhinolaryngologists also manage the treatment of head and neck cancers, as well as perform reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgery.

Makati Medical Center has a full-staffed Otorhinolaryngology department that offers subspecialty services in otology (ear), rhinopharyngology (nose, sinuses, throat), bronchoesophagology (upper aerodigestive tract), head and neck tumors, plastic, reconstructive and maxillofacial trauma.

Our department runs a specialty Hearing and Dizziness Clinic that is equipped with advanced diagnostic instruments to test patients with hearing and balance disorders.

Pure Tone Audiometry and Speech Audiometry

Pure Tone Audiometry is the key hearing test we use to identify your hearing threshold levels, enabling us to determine the degree, type and configuration of a hearing loss. PTA is our basis for diagnosing and managing your hearing problem.

Because PTA is subjective, behavioral measurement of hearing threshold, as it relies on patient response to pure tone stimuli, we only use this on adults and children old enough to cooperate with the test procedure.

PTA is conducted in a sound-treated booth where patients are asked to press the button signal if he or she hears a tone in the headphones. The faintest tone heard is recorded.

In addition to pure tone audiometry, Speech Audiometry has become a fundamental tool in hearing-loss assessment. We use this diagnostically to examine speech-processing abilities throughout the auditory system, and to crosscheck the validity of pure-tone thresholds.

Play Audiometry

For school children three years or older, Play Audiometry is used. This is a modified standard pure tone screening procedure where the child is conditioned to respond to the sound by placing a toy in the container, making it a more viable test for children.

Impedance Audiometry

We use Impedance Audiometry to determine the status of your tympanic membrane and middle ear. The series of tests includes Tympanometry, Eustachian tube function test, and Acoustic reflex test—used together to assess the outer and ear system, including the Eustachian tube.

Screening and Fitting for Hearing Aids

If our tests find that you need it, our specialists will prescribed and fit you with a hearing aid. Our clinic offers many high-quality Siemens models to suit your different needs or budget.

Electronystagmography

If you feel dizzy or lose your balance, we use electronystagmography (ENG) as a diagnostic test to identify the cause of vertigo, dizziness, or balance dysfunction. The ENG tests your vestibular system by recording involuntary movements of the eye caused by a condition known as nystagmus. In this test, electrodes are attracted around the eye, and we measure the eye movements in relation to the ground electrode.

Newborn Hearing Screening

The first two years of your child’s life are the most crucial in learning speech and language. But in order to learn speech and language, your baby should be able to hear. While it is unlikely that your child will have a hearing loss, it is best to know early on. With the optimal conditions and a good probe fit, your child will be given virtually the same chances as other children who have no hearing problems.

Thus, at our Makati Med, we advocate the screening your newborn baby’s hearing, through the use of Otoacoustic Emission Test. Hearing tests for newborn babies are very safe, and most babies in fact, sleep through these test.

Video Otoscopy

With the use of Video Otoscopies—a scope attached to a camera through the ear canal—families of patients with hearing loss can see for themselves the problems or infections in the ear canal and tympanic membrane.

Videolaryngostroboscopy Unit (Video Laboratory)

Our clinic houses a separate Videolaryngostroboscopy Unit that allows our specialists to examine your vibrating vocal cords through the illumination of your larynx.

The information regarding about vocal cord muscular tone and symmetry is recorded on video tape, and thus vibration can be viewed paused or in slow motion. This allows small abnormalities that influence the voice to be detected. The resulting visual image enables our specialists to make accurate diagnosis of conditions and diseases of the vocal cords, including masses or lesions, abnormal motion, inflammation, broken blood vessels scarring and other disorders.

Flexible Fiberoptic Rhinolaryngoscopy

In addition to the rigid laryngoscope, the Clinic has acquired a flexible fiberoptic rhinolaryngoscope to aid our consultants in assessing both the structure and function of the upper respiratory tract.  This equipment is very useful in patients who are overanxious, those who may have an easily excitable gag reflex and those with a narrow nasophageal isthmus or a prominent and overhanging epiglottis--a full and satisfactory assessment may not be possible with the rigid laryngoscope.  These are the patients in whom examination with the flexible fiberoptic rhinolaryngoscope will be of most value.  Similar to the videolaryngoscopy procedure, the flexible fiberoptic rhinolaryngospce can also be attached to the camera system for video documentation.
