The Clemenia Twins
The Clemenia twins Peter and Paul were born at the Manila Doctors Hospital fused at their ischial bones—their hips—in a rare congenital anomaly known as Tetrapus Ischiopagus.
Because they were born to poor parents who could not afford the costs of surgically separating the twins, they were referred to Dr. Raul G. Fores, who immediately approved of their transfer to the Makati Med's pediatric nursery.
The twins practically grew up in our nursery, pampered with the love and care of the pediatric and nursery staff for a year until they were ready to be operated on.
The Makati Med team took nine months of extensive preparation, planning and mock exercises. Each member's role during the actual operation was planned carefully, down to the timing.
The procedure, which involved a sizable number of doctors, nurses, operating room attendants and photographers, was carefully rehearsed again and again before the actual operation. The time and motion of each process was put to test in a dry run of the procedure carried out prior to surgery.
In May 1998, a "Dream Team" of doctors—pediatricians, plastic surgeons, pediatric surgeons, urologists, orthopedic surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and OR attendants—spent 17 hours in the operating room surgically separating the conjoined twins. They succeeded.
This marked a milestone in Philippine medicine: it was the country's first successful surgical separation of conjoined Tetrapus Ischiophagus twins. We are proud that it happened here, at the Makati Med.
